Wow, what a close finish. I feel very fortunate to have won. I was following the board the last couple months, but I didn't want to suddenly start posting and jinx my team. I definatly got lucky with avoiding the LAD pitching mess and getting a couple extra 2-steps late.
Barry Lamar/Legends: It was a heck of a battle to the final day, awesome job by you and congrats on a great year. The last week was nerve-wracking trading the lead bath and forth.
Goh: Great job hanging in there neck and neck with BL and me until late in the year. We had 4 or 5 buys on you and you just wouldn't go away. You had the best everyday roster for quite a while.
Catcher: Damn, your 3 teams kept me up nights for a while there, I could just see dropping from 1st to 4th on the last day. Nicely done.
Congrats to all the other league and overall winners. It was quite a battle and I will be back next year to give everyone another shot at my title. :)

I actually trail in BT League 47 by 2 points with Miggy Cabrera in my holster for Tuesday. The other guy has Fernando Rodney. Couple of years ago Tulo scored 12 points in the one game playoff - Holliday still hasn't touched home plate 8-) and I won MAC League 50 by 0.66 so I'm feeling lucky.

PBR - Yes, I see you slid into league 2nd place yesterday and real close to top 25 OA. I had a feeling you'd move up. It's hard to quit teams that are doing pretty well, even if not as well as hoped for. I've only quit 2 teams in in my 7 years of playing CDM games, two 2007 teams when I had a horrible year in roto.

Kershaw is scheduled to start today, BC. Fantistics does not have him starting at all next week, but it's hard for me to believe that given the down time he's had that the Dodgers wouldn't at least give him a few innings to "tune up" later in the week. Do you think they'd intentionally sit him on the bench for 10 days or so and then start him for the playoffs? I guess anything is possible with Torre. If you've got other options and he actually does pitch today, I think that playing Kershaw is a risk.

We have 2 diff RPs - my Mo & Nathan to your Fuentes & Franklin. I used a buy on Broxton as I was not content with Fuentes lately. Hopefully it'll help me gain a few spots on the field.

Mr. Will & Bubba, I saw your posts re: MS teams. Don't give up hope of top 25! ... I've seen some of the rosters of the top teams & some are peculiar. As Mr. Will noted - the guy in 8th seems to have quit. A guy in Goh's league is in 12th, but didn't use any buys or call-up & seems to have quit as well. Another guy in Goh's league who's # 1 has had Jose Reyes for his backup SS. That caught my eye awhile ago ... just odd to roster someone who hadn't played since mid-May. My teams have slipped some but I have hopes of getting back in the top 10 or maybe top 5. I'm pretty sure I won't be making a run at the top prize. I'm actually closer to # 1 in BT and Budget than MS. Best of luck this week guys! ... Bubba's still going strong for #1 in Budget!

I've noticed some problems for some BT top teams in the bullpen. On my spreadsheet of the top 12 teams in BT, Fuentes is owned by 4, Franklin is owned by 3, and Street is owned by 1. Both Broxton and Bell are 100% owned by the top 12 in BT, so the other 2 RPs we all have will be a big factor down the stretch. Nathan is owned by Satchel & myself, and Rivera is only owned by my teams. Aardsma is owned by 6, Wilson by 2 and Paps by 1. It's gonna be a wild ride these next 3 weeks!

PBR & Goh - yeah, the pitching situation has been crazy yhis week. I've gone from thinking about 2-steps, to being happy with one start! ... Next week or two have some 2-steps, but not sure how many will actually happen. ... Goh, you're right - a bunch of these young guns are going to have limited starts or just get shut down after another start or two. I don't think anyway guys like YoGa, Scherzer, Hanson pitch thru the end of the season for non-contending teams. If the Marlins get eliminated in the next 10 days or so, J.J. will get shut down too. Kershaw's looking very iffy too. Hopefully U.J. will finish strong. The Boston rainout Friday messed up a potential 2-step for Lester in 2 weeks. That damages any chance of my teams making that big push. Lester & Doc are my only low % SPs. I don't see a lot of 2-steps the final week.

When MKS gets on his 50 post rant he fills the board with nonsense. .... Goh, I agree on the young SPs - Many will be shut down in a few more starts. I think we'll be hard pressed to find that many 2-steps after next week. Carp won't go 2 again - the Cards won't pitch him 2X the last week. U.J. and Lince are set up to be possible 2X the final week if the Giants & Rockies stay close. Lester might if the Red Sox need him twice. Greinke has been pushed back 2 days, Kershaw's literally running into walls, YoGa could go 2 next week, but I wouldn't bet on it. Goh & Mr. Will - thanks for the encouragement, and you're totally right - it's nice to be hanging around the top 10 or 20. Except for MS last year I've never had teams do as well as this year. Always tough for anyone to see there teams slide back, but I've had plenty of good fortune this year. My Mom's progressed from her broken pelvis so she's now walking well with a cane now - a lot better than the walker she had to use for almost 2 months. She reads the sports page every day looking for those Nathan and Rivera saves in the boxscores ... lol .... I've also told her how bad those never ending saves from B.Wilson & Franklin are. It's funny - as real life pitchers I don't really like either guy. Wilson is a wild man - always seems to give up a few hits/walks and Franklin just doesn't have strikeout stuff. Neither was remotely on my radar a couple months ago .... maybe my radar needs fixin' ... lol

PBR : you might be real glad you didn't quit your MS team. You not only can get 2nd place, but you can get 1st. All of my teams seem to be in freefall now. If Mariano continues to get no saves at all and Nathan continues to blow saves, combined with my cold hitters my teams won't see the top 10 again, and will be lucky to stay top 25. Reynolds has been a terrible callup for me so far. I have zero possibility of winning BT or Budget and MS looks out of reach. Very disappointing turn all of my teams have taken the past 2 weeks. Legends - I think you did a terrific job of plugging the leaks in your line-up with your last few buys and call-ups. Mauer was a real key (IMHO). But Tulo, Reynolds, Morales, etc. are all big time additions and you already had the hottest starter out there (Wainwright) and the best bullpen (Franklin is cleaning up.). When I look at all the squads in the top 10. I think it's gonna be tough for anybody to catch you now. Excellent work!

The Goh Network really took a tumble the past two days. PBR - I think a lot of team went for hitting as you did. The problem for me was that over the past few weeks the advantage that I used to have in fielding a superior line-up has disappeared as a bunch of teams picked up Mauer or Tulo or a studs that I don't have like Morales and Reynolds. I had been pretty lucky about rotating my closers to fit my hitters under the cap, but I've basically lost 25 points to the field the last 2 days with high % saves by Brox (yesterday) and Bell (today) while I had them on the bench. The Qualls injury was really a blessing in disguise for those teams who still had him. Franklin, Aardsma, and Street are all significant upgrades over a healthy Qualls. Hard to complain too much though. It's been a great season.

Catcher: My mid-team looks about done. The team has never hit any high it happens this way sometimes. I probably am going to junk, see where I am at the end of the week. If I think I can take 2nd in the league I will go for it. If not there is no reason to fight for the other spots. If they still payed top 100 overall I would keep going but top 25 is starting to be a really stretch for this team. No worries though I have some other good teams and really have been putting more efforts into BT. I gave it the old try doesen't always work the way you want it to in the mid game. I have won mid-season before, I have really done it all in this game. I won't play it next year unless Fanball changes the payouts because they are terrible. I had expected to move up a few spots & I didn't. You and I only had 2 diff. SPs - my Lester & Doc were equaled by your Verly. I have only had 1 save - Nathan. You didn't fare well with Howell tonight, but you still have saves from Fuentes & also Aardsma who could get another save tonight. If your Verly matches my combined Lester/Doc this weekend you'll likely stay ahead of me despite Johan ..

On another note those Franklin saves are drivin' me crazy! He's owned by a bunch of teams especially in MS & get seems to get saves nightly! If Nathan and Mariano don't get more saves I have a feeling I won't be moving up.

Legends - I have a feeling that it's not gonna be a very week for me. That's a lotta cap space to expend for 0 points or even a single start. I dropped Johan on my Budget version of this team. Things played out a little differently there and I spent my last buy on Lee this week. At least you have Howard and Werth who have both been going off. Best of luck this week, buddy. I bought Kendry last week in MS. He's been makin' some noise, too. I was forced to play Adam Jones (it was either him or Wieters or J-Upton) this week cuz of the sal cap hit from Johan. I haven't had a week that looked this bad on Monday in a while. Of course, I can't really complain. I've been in the top 5 an awfully long time here with no buys left. C'est la vie!

PBR - I wouldn't be quitting with your team either. I know you're not where you were last year, but you're not all that far out of top 25 OA, and ya never know if my team will slip. 2nd in league still pays 150 - way more than enough to cover your cost the rest of the way. MS is such a crapshoot - just a few wrong hitters or pitchers can get you in trouble in just a few weeks with not much time to recover.

Hope Mauer keeps doing what he's done ... he's been such a stud at a weak position - well worth his salary to me. When I bought Mauer in early June I got a few snickers from the Budget board, but I really thought I had a low % gem.

Mr. Will & Goh - thanks ... I've done well lately mostly because some of my hitters got hot again. Mariano's also been racking up low % saves too, to offset Nathan's save drought. I have been somewhat surprised the past couple months with my teams. From June 14 to August 9th I had 5 RPs and only 9 SPs. I was low on buys and kept Qualls on the bench when I bought Nathan (and dropped Johan who was killing my salary structure). I was worried about both FF & Qualls, so I figured I'd keep 5 RPs til maybe the all-star break. But when FF went DL again I bought Mariano instead of using Qualls. I used my next to last buy on Adam Lind a few weeks ago instead of buying J.Upton who went DL soon after. Got lucky there. I finally dumped Qualls for Carp on my last buy 10 days ago. Sure didn't plan on going 8 weeks with 5 RPs & never using Qualls from the bench. I've stayed pretty aggressive all year except for my being overly cautious with my bullpen. Now if I can use my call-ups wisely I might be able to make one last run for #1. Best of luck everyone! Cool Guys has taken over the top spot in both BT and Budget. He's got Ubaldo and Felix going today. He made (IMHO) a great move by getting Mauer and Nyler Morgan 10 days ago. Also, he picked up Prince Fielder who's been going off lately. My teams on the other hand have been diving. No saves from the bnullpen has been the major culprit (especially J.P. Howell & Aardvark). Catcher, however, is makin' a move up the leaderboard.

Legends - Regarding Tulo: sometimes ya just gotta be lucky. When Rollins was getting benched by Charlie Manuel for like 4 games in a row and with Reyes on the DL, I just figured I couldn't be using 2800 any longer to get me 2 points in a week. Zobrist was coming back to earth and Tulo was starting to heat up. He got 12 points the first week for me and then proceeded to go ballistic. As soon as I got him, it looked like a luxury buy cuz Rollins finally started to put it together. They've both been on fire ever since. If I waited another week I would have had no reason to pick up Tulo. Sometimes it just pays to be lucky!

I only had Tulo & Kendry on MS. Had Bartlett on BT, BUdget & DC teams. During the Rays game the announcers said that only twice in MLB history have 2 players hit for cycle on same day. One pair did it in 1902 (I think) and in September 1, 2008 Stephen Drew & Adrian Beltre both hit for the cycle. Would have been weird to have owned both Tulo & Bartlett, had Bartlett hit a single in his last AB.

yeah, the J.Upton/Cruz problem will shake things up just a bit. May force some buys and at a minimum a slary squeeze on some teams. I own both on MS, but my team is better able to handle the problem. On BT on Budget I only have Cruz. My bench is getting mighty thin & with only 1 buy left I likely won't be making that big push I'd need. Teams still with 3 buys or so are in much better shape to withstand future problems til call-ups. Legend's Barry team & Cool Guys both have 3 buys left. Pacifica, Up Dogs & Mr. Will's son all have 2 buys. Junk Mail's Green Tuesday team has 5 buys left - he could definitely make a run. HB still has 3 buys left too. You & I and PBR have a more delicate position with 0 or 1 buy left. I can't wait for call-ups!!

Catcher - I think there's probably a good 20 teams that have a shot at the title. Of course, the further down the line you go - the slimmer the chances. It's really a terrific race though. Depends a lot upon how people use their remaining buys as well as who gets hot and who gets injured. Injuries to Cruz & J. Upton will throw an interesting wrench into the whole works. My last buy on J.P. Howell has not been working out very well so far (although it does free up 650 of cap space).

No problem Goh - I think I'm still a contender at 11th OA. Only 9 points out of 9th, and 100 pts. out of top 5, and 150 from 1st. All it takes is a good run for a week or two. Your team went from 10-15 OA to top 5 in a very short time. I do notice that your % stats in your column would change quite a bit if you had included Hairybacks and myself. My 3 teams all start Mauer, Zobrist & Bartlett, and both of HB's teams start Zobrist & Ianetta. Interesting column though ...

Legends - Just wanted to let you know that this week's article is an analysis of why the race for the title in BT has tightened up. It seems to be the discussion on everybody's mind. Anyway, it's certainly not a personal indictment or anything. Hell, you're still in the best position of anybody (although Pacifica Pilots' line-up is also looking strong). As I said in the article, I think one of the reasons that the rest of us have started to catch up a bit has to do with regression to the mean. Anyway, hope everybody enjoys it and best of luck the rest of the year. Here's to hoping that Santana has a monster game vs. the Padres on Sunday (we both have him going this week). Also I used the player distribution for the top 10 teams OA. Doesn't mean I think Hairybacks or Catcher (or Ed's Crane Pool for that matter) don't have a shot at the OA title. Well, I didn't get Justin Upton on my MS team but that was totally due to an error rather than any crystal ball analysis about injuries. 8-) There's so many cheap OFs available in MS, I don't think it will really hurt anybody very badly. For BT, I'll just slot in Sin Soo Choo for J-Upton and bring somebody off the bench to hit at DH. Sounds like Nelson Cruz and Alexei should be back this weekend. Things are really tightening up at the top of the BT leaderboard. The top 8-10 teams are all within about 100 points of Barry Lamar right now. I don't have Lincecum in this week cuz of 6 doubles, so for one week I'm hoping (against hope) that he doesn't get the win. Considering he shut out the Phillies last week, he'll probably ring up 30 points vs. the sorry Reds line-up.
