Congrats to Boalt...nice job! And also to bbs regulars Slam and Richie for finishing on the board. 10/07 19:01:18 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie
Looks like things are official now. Yesterday cost me $250 in points, but I barely hung on for 4th League over Mickey Mantle here. Overjoyed with that result. Congrats to all who won some $$$, to Boalt for winning the 'Apple Cup' (boohoo) :-((( and anything else he might've won, and a special thanks to Slam and to all posters. See you next year! 10/07 11:46:49 hb8 Boalt Bombers
Thanks, Slam! I'm really happy to have held on. Thanks for all of the purchase updates throughout the season. Also, congrats to everyone who took home some green this season. I look forward to next year. 10/06 21:27:03 hb2 GrandSlam
Way to go Boalt! Enjoy your winnings--a well-deserved victory. Great job to all other winners also. Another blast of a HR season. 10/05 20:13:35 hb2 Down`s all business in 2009

You're welcome guys. Hang in there, Boalt. The finish line is just ahead. Great season for you, no matter how it ends. Good luck these last 5 days. 09/29 13:07:25 hb8 Boalt Bombers
Thanks, Slam, and good luck to everyone in the hunt for cash. I hope I can hold off this guy in 2nd ... my team's running on fumes at this point and it seems that he's caught all the breaks, while I've caught none, for the past two weeks or so. I know we all have stretches like that, but it's been amazing to see all the save situations for my closers blown by a team's offense in the 8th inning, players like Crawford suddenly stop running when I get them in there (while Ellsbury is stealing 2nd and 3rd in the 8th inning of a 10-run game), and so on. He also has some nice players on upsurges and generally has a better roster at this point, to give credit where it is due. We'll see how it goes. 09/29 10:02:47 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie
One final 'thank you', Slam. :-) 09/29 07:07:43 hb2 GrandSlam

I like the current structure - if you're out of the OA picture early on without much hope for sneaking into the top 10, the league is all you really have to play for. As for the difficulty in obtaining a money finish in a tough league, there always be differences in the quality of players in various leagues. 200 or so teams is a small sample with no effort made to distribute "talent," whatever that might be, or experience, past performance, etc. If Richie -- who, last time I checked, was 24th overall but out of the money in his league -- is happy with the current structure, that's a pretty strong endorsement. 09/22 10:17:45 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie
Thanks again for the Purchase Report, Slam. Oh, and the payout structure is just fine. I much enjoyed my cheap league win last year. 09/22 07:25:54 hb2 GrandSlam
One thing I've noticed about doing these purchase reports all these years is that the rate each league uses its buys mostly follows how the league standings go early on. So someone runs out to a big lead league, others in the league feel the need to make more moves. I think that somewhat dictates how competitive a league will be--very competitive if the early buys are good, not so competitive if they are wasted. I don't think that will change based on a change in the payout structure--there will always be a league where someone will get screwed. However, if you were to say take $500 from each lge 2nd and pay a top 15 overall instead, that would help that situation (but you know the guy who finishes 16th o/a will feel screwed). 09/22 07:18:04 hb2 GrandSlam

8th place team in league 4 would be in 1st place in league 7 09/21 14:44:33 hb8 RedAir Express plus AstroFan
I personally don't have a problem with the payout structure. If I was going to think outside the box for a possible change, I'd rather see something like overall rankings only for first two months, then divide teams into leagues using a snake assignment system so the top two overall teams aren't in the same league at that point. Doesn't mean top teams won't be in the same league at the end though. Only change I would have really liked to see was our team's performance. 14/145 after week 1, and still 13/142 after week 11. Didn't know what would happen when we were sitting 10/93 after week 16, but a little luck along the way makes breaking even a possibility we would be very happy with. That is what is great about the roto baseball format... With some good buys and luck along the way, teams can still gain in the end. 09/21 12:11:32 hb4 Unfair Advantage
Just another reason I wish there was more overall money in High Roller and less league significance. Guy who is 4th overall right now is tied for 4th in league. Very good chance a team will come in 4th and 11th overall and just break even after a solid year beating 90% of teams. Anyone agree with me here? 09/15 23:31:54 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie

Yeah, and I thought that while Lind would earn his tag, he probably wouldn't exactly kill it the rest of the year (this was before the Texas series). Agreed on Manny - whether it's lack of juice or something else, he looks like garbage, and while I have Bay now, I sure wouldn't pick him up if I didn't have him. Tough to get HR/RBI you can count on over a 5-week period. 09/04 14:05:50 hb2 GrandSlam
Bay and Manny were my other choices, so I think I'd take that Bay-Ells trade now if I could. I decided to roll the dice with Ibanez. No Bay because I already have Youk, Ells, VMart, and Pedroia, so I thought Bay would be a little too much (especially since I'm a diehard NYY fan). No Manny because he looked like crap at the time and I didn't trust him to turn it back on. At this point it looks like Lind would've been the best choice with that low cap #. 09/04 12:55:32 hb8 Boalt Bombers
Thanks, Slam - good luck to you too. Coming from a Seattle fan who watched Ibanez for several years, I can say that he can be incredibly streaky, and it can last for months. His year-to-year consistency is a "false consistency," belying his intraseason streaks and droughts. He can have three bad months in a row. I wouldn't be surprised for him to continue to struggle throughout September (and the playoffs), but I think the safe bet is on him turning it around at least a bit, and I hope he does for your sake. Tough to play him for these 1-for-20 weeks, especially while both Craw and Ells are playing well and producing in counting cats. I wish they allowed trades - I'd gladly trade you Bay for Ells. 09/03 14:48:36 hb2 GrandSlam
Boalt, nice run--looking real strong. Good luck down the stretch. 09/03 14:47:51 hb2 GrandSlam
I'll wait on that hot streak from Ibanez--can't really do anything else anyway, other than keep playing Craw and Els together which I absolutely don't need (SBs). 09/03 14:46:10 hb2 GrandSlam
Major problem I'm having is HRs and the guy I chose a few weeks ago to help that problem is killing me. Ibanez at like .140 for me in 18 gms w/1 HR and 4 RBIs. Read this today: According to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, Raul Ibanez has hit just .179 with only one home run and five RBI since July 27. His average is tied for the worst in the major leagues during that span, and his .292 slugging is the sixth worst. Our View: Ibanez has always been known as a streaky hitter, so he's bound to snap out of his prolonged slump soon. Until then, however, it's not worth sinking your lineup waiting. If you have any alternatives, start them instead. 09/03 14:44:10 hb2 GrandSlam
Other choice was Kendry over Reynolds, looking for avg with power at a cheap price. Can't complain there yet, but now am desperate for some HRs. 09/03 14:43:10 hb2 GrandSlam
You're welcome guys. Thought I screwed up one call-up with Vazquez--took him over JJ. Needed Vaz' 2 starts for Ks, then he got pushed back Monday morn so I pulled him out because I didn't like the 1. At least you didn't burn for Nyjer Morgan this week, Richie. That has to be the worst possible move anyone could have made, although I don't feel too bad about my decisionmaking process going into it. I agonized for a long time over whether to pick him up (needed SBs and needed a cheap OF with AJones and JUpton out for most if not all of the week). can't believe I benched Haren; and w/ my ratios no less. at least I only played FF in DC. was watching the game and he was 1 strike away and VMart kept fouling it off. then boom, just like KRod when I played him, boom, boom, boom. of course he picks up 2 saves already this week, after he destroyed my chances almost (Lidge is the other reason) single handedly. then again I used my last buy on Verly for a home double, which he also blows up , sit him for a gem, while Hardy' s sent to the minors while Tulo goes crazy. takes 1 1/2 weeks to go from the penthouse to the outhouse. 08/14 07:11:55 hb2 GrandSlam

Boalt, real nice season so far. Unfortunate last week w/Kins but nice bounce back to the top. You guys have a great 4-way battle up in the rarified air of the leaderboard. A bunch of us would love to join in, but time (and purchases) is running out. 08/14 07:02:55 hb2 GrandSlam
You're welcome guys. BigR, good luck w/Ut. Would think we can't go wrong with these big bats in productive line-ups, but they have to produce a lot to make it worth the tag. Lost a big low % Youk this week for 6--ouch! Opening roster choice was Youk over Morneau because I liked his line-up better and over Teix because I trusted his avg to stay above .300. Prob w/that is the HR/RBIs that I'm losing over the season. Have to hope he comes back hot. 08/12 23:01:30 hb9 Billy Chapel
Thanks as always for the interesting report, Slam! Hey you had to enjoy the Ibanez big fly tonight. Pity the 10 high rollers and 62 IC'ers who started Nolasco tonight - OUCH, but we've all been there sometime before. 08/12 19:46:46 hb8 Boalt Bombers
Thanks for the report, Slam, and best of luck (well, not so good that you catch me, but best of luck otherwise!). We'll see if I can overcome the damage from having Pedroia on the pine and Kinsler in last week. It will suck if that winds up making a difference (and I missed out on two homers and a bag, so it may). Now this week, I let my fear of missing a RyHo 4-HR week against a bunch of righties convince me to play him rather than Longoria. Longoria has shaken off his bad wheels and suddenly is Willie Mays Hays on the basepaths, with a couple bags already this week (and yeah, SBs are my weakest cat). I love this game ... the torture makes it more fun, in a strange way. 08/12 09:25:56 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie

For the record I wasn't accusing anyone of cheating. It's a cheat game however whether you wish to admit it or not. I have no idea about Patriot's Day nor should I. I made my changes on sunday evening and looked at rotowire early in the a.m. before I left to check on injuries. To allow changes 1 minute after a game starts doesn't seem fair to those who didn't have access. So be it. Funny, had I known and had I been sitting at my computer rather than in my doctor's office my alternatives would have been Yo in HR and Lester in DC. 1 gem and 1 disaster. Wouldn't have mattered much unless I would have used Carp. Crazy week. 08/05 00:08:24 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie
I only found out by lurking on the DC BBS. But Brockport's right, every year the Patriot Game in Boston also starts before the deadline. Last year I snatched Ellsbury after he homered and stole 2 bases in the early innings. As an ex-programmer, I can vouch that it would cost Fanball a decent chunk of change to program in a different start time every week such a Monday game got scheduled. I suppose they could alert us to such though, the way they do with regard to the changed All-Star week deadline. Now scheduling a Santana 2-step concurrent with a Pujols 5-game week, the 1st 2 of which in Grand Canyon Field, the 1st of those against Santana, now that's dirty. :-((( 08/04 17:56:00 hb3 BROCKPORT BULLIES
I've been playing High Roller for 5 or 6 years now and although I enjoy the comments on the board I've never posted before, however I feel commenting on AA's post is necessary. I can't understand how you can say that was a cheat game if all of us play by the same rules and the start time was known to all that looked at the schedule. Boston plays at 11:AM on Patriots day and other rain-outs are re-scheduled and begin before our deadline. It's the same for all of us. No one got cheated. Best of luck going forward AA but always check Monday morning for news and info. If you don't have access to a computer because of work or other restrictions perhaps having a back-up person to assist you would help. This is not a knock on AA but using the word cheated is IMO not true and not fair to Fanball or the other players. PS: Watch Greinke srikeout 12 and pitch a 3 hit shutout in Oakland this weekend. 08/04 16:34:46 _81 AA Yankees
Has anyone entertained the notion that a CHEAT game, that started at 9:00 a.m., in week 18, wherein ALL players were either unaware or unavailable is preTty unfair to the others who painstakingly prepard their line-ups the evening before. Teams should be locked in when the game starts, as in all othr leagues I've ever participated in. Am I pissed off ? You bet. I work so hard to compete with you guys and to lose ground and money because of a CHEAT game makes me feel like I got cheated. Shame on Fanball for allowing this fiasco to happen so late in the year. 08/04 00:28:30 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie

Richie- This is my 7th year playing HR/DC. I've NEVER had a buy left on Aug.1 Kind of feels like I have a legitimate shot. Have 2 buys left in DC. Unfortunately, I have some catching up to do. I need to learn more patience as you consistently show. Have to admit that w/out Potter's advice I'm sure I'd have 0 buys left. I told him that IF I won this thing that he'll get a ring. haha, but true. Thanks for the kind words, but there's a lot of baseball left. Maybe it's both the Yankees' year and mine. Would be so sweet. 07/28 10:37:14 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie
Yankees! Just peeked at the standings for the first time in a month or so. Congratulations! And even a move left too! For you, probably more impressive!! ;-) 07/28 08:21:40 hb2 GrandSlam
Yes, RyHo on the bench--not a good start w/that decision. Some tough pitchers still to come though. Just got to hope he doesn't go nuts. And you're right, you have to have some luck with the timing to win this thing. I had it early but it's been brutal lately. 07/28 02:44:12 _81 AA Yankees
Slam- Did you sit RyHo this week ? Still 6 days to go. I don't know what that means, but it's true. haha 07/28 02:44:08 _81 AA Yankees
Slam- Did you sit RyHo this week ? Still 6 days to go. I don't know what that means, but it's true. haha 07/28 02:41:42 _81 AA Yankees
Slam- Did the same w/ Braun. Haven't been able to "time" him right. I guess what it takes to win is good timing. Fortunately I didn't dare sit him this week. 07/27 17:49:42 hb2 GrandSlam
So this week, we try to turn it around. Hill and Braun safely back in with hopes of continuing some hot hitting. The major decision this week was sitting RyHow, who I've played basically all year, in favor of D.Wright (or Youk or Pedroia w/other moves). RyHow needs to just be normal and not go all A.Hill/Braun on me--then I can get him back in next week when things have turned around a bit in the avg dept. I have a plan...last week's stupidity just wasn't part of it. :-) Good luck to all this week. 07/27 17:42:36 hb2 GrandSlam
Believe it or not, that really wasn't my stupidest move of the week. I benched A.Hill's 6 home games for Alexei's 8-game schedule. Maybe if this was hoops, that would make a little sense. Hill 9-26, 6 Rs, 7 RBIs, 4 HRs...Alexei 8-31, 3 Rs, 3 RBIs. What a dipsheet! 07/27 17:39:33 hb2 GrandSlam
After my pick-up of Braun--the guy I needed to take me to the top--tanked for all 3 of the weeks I had him at .235 w/no HRs and just 5 RBIs, I made the rookie mistake of benching him and he responded with 3 HRs, 8 RBIs, and .385 avg. How is it that sheet like that always comes up and bites you in the arse? 07/27 17:36:02 hb2 GrandSlam
Need a big rebound week or at least something good enough to stop freefalling in all 3--HR/DC/MS. Last week made some of the worst calls of my fantasized career. 07/22 14:21:13 hb2 GrandSlam

The 'Big Apple'? Pishposh. We're talkin' real apples here, as in where they're grown. A few of us are from Washington state. Last year we had an informal state contest. The 'Apple Cup' refers to the college football trophy (thanks, DB) Washington U and Washington State play for on the final weekend of each season. Last year I think Wash U came into the game winless, while State had one single victory over a Division II team. 07/12 23:55:32 _81 AA Yankees
Rich- If I'm one of the "apple" guys you were referring to, a great characterization, at least of me. I've lived in San Diego for the last 30 years. Nevertheless, being born and raised on the streets of N.Y.C., growing up in the Bronx and Queens and then living in Manhattan speaks for itself. The level of competition here and in GB has you playing for more than the cash. 1/2 left is a lot of baseball to play. Dodger, I don't think the money you pay up front has anything to do with the # of purchases you get. If they thought it would be a better game, they'd give you more purchases. I went a little higher than Kouz at 3B with Wright. Little bit of a salary adj to make that work from Sandoval but was fun figuring it out. McCann to Baker got me 700K, then jumped on Price and pulled one of my 1200+ guys for another 500K+. The rest was a few small adjs. Prob not the smartest thing I ever did, but I do still like my line-up. Will need to get Sando back in there though on high-priced SP 2-step weeks. 05/25 12:30:59 hb2 GrandSlam
BigR, went the 7 SP way last week for the first time in a while and dropped 60 o/a points in saves (nice week to sit Bell). Will try not to do that again until I get back to where I was. Heh, heh... BR and Boalt playin' for the HR "Apple Cup?" 04/26 21:50:09 hb8 Boalt Bombers
I feel your pain with Peavy. Almost started with him due to the fairly reasonable price, but I held off for fear that he'd go to Wrigley or some other less pitcher-friendly environs. Maybe a trade to a contender would light a fire under him. 04/26 17:21:23 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie
Aha! That's what my undermotivated squad needs. A challenge! Uh, ya wanna motivate Peavy too while you're at it, Boalt? 04/26 16:14:39 hb8 Boalt Bombers
You beat me out for the Washington championship last year, Richie, but I'm looking to take it back again this year. 04/25 06:30:21 hb7 Mick`s Man Crushes
Hate to sound like the sky is falling, but that Lindstrom outing's gonna leave a mark for a while. Looks like it cost me 8 points in this league and 15 in my other league. That's amazing. 04/21 11:00:21 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie
Plenty of time left to make a run - scoring a few would help - and too early to know which leagues will wind up being tough ones or not. In my case, I've actually roto-managed so as to put more $$$ into my offense while hopefully not damaging my pitching too much. Half of that plan has worked quite well, actually, while the main half sure, sure ain't. 04/20 18:17:18 hb7 Mick`s Man Crushes
Hey Richie, you've definitely drawn yourself another brutal league but I'm sure you'll make a run. I'm off to a decent start so far offensively, now just need to pick up the pitching numbers. Looks like my hitting and your pitching would make quite the squad right now. Hoping for a quick fix this week with all the big guns active (Johan/CC/Lince/Haren/Peavy) plus Nolasco and Gallardo. 04/18 10:38:07 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie
Hi Mick, good to hear from you. Richie been fine, tho' off to his slowest start since they changed Hiram Bithorn from the best hitters' park in the majors to the best pitchers' park without notifying me. Rotoslumping, too, as football was not velly velly good to Big Richie, and basketball was its usual farce. How 'bout you? 04/17 22:38:47 hb7 Mick`s Man Crushes
OK, down to 5! Maybe I should keep finding things to complain about :-) 04/17 21:46:47 hb7 Mick`s Man Crushes
OK, 6 now. Still not happy about it. Hey Richie, how you been? 04/17 21:33:37 hb7 Mick`s Man Crushes
Kept flip flopping between Nathan/Lindstrom or Soria/Bell before the season. Can't believe my choice has already cost me 7 saves. Almost seems impossible this early. 04/16 21:34:23 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie
Yes, Fanball, how about telling us when things are going to be fixed! Hmmph. Oh. They are? NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! 04/13 17:34:51 hb2 The Florida Chikihuts

DB, sometimes the minnows get between little cracks that the sharks will have to get around of. Just make sure once we get into open space in september that you get to the finish line before them sharks eat you. 03/27 23:14:43 hb5 Team Gamblor
Yea i had that feeling last year. The only difference I see in this game rather than DC is that all the teams will make moves till near the end because they are free instead of paying something weekly. 03/27 09:25:32 dp704 Top Gun
You will do fine DB! 03/27 08:25:05 hb4 Dodger Blues

We're actually on a pretty good pace, I think. At 1G, many teams wait until very near the end to sign up. And welcome back, everyone! Getting happily crowded enough that it's time to go generic. 03/22 09:04:11 hb6 JaserD 2

I doubt we get that many this year (240) I think we will be around 150-160 at most. only 15 days till we start so i really only think 1 more league fills... what happens if they dont fill a league and have only like 8 or so overflow... 03/20 22:50:36 hb1 HiRollerBigRichie
