Correction, only $8.00 was necessary. I guess I've never paid attention to how FPs are awarded. It's never been worth the effort...

As it has turned out, there is a happy ending. Evidently, Fanball was just pullin' my leg. I see my FPs have in fact been credited to my account. Imagine my relief...

I see the free agent filing frenzy has begun in earnest. Awards hardware will be handed out soon. Another six weeks until new salaries. Another three months, and a little bit, until pitchers and catchers report. Enjoy the off-season, ya'll...

I suppose the funniest thing about my FanPoints award thing is, I received the obligatory "Internet Challenge Prize Winner Information" e-mail today and it stated that my FanPoints will be applied to my account within the next two to four weeks. Say what? Two to four weeks to push a button and credit an account for freakin' FanPoints? Dollars? Perhaps I could understand the delay. But FanPoints? They can't be serious.

Jeezuz, I didn't even realize there was a fifth place IC payout. I sat on my hands since the first week of Aug., with a team goin' nowhere, and in the end I'm rewarded a whoppin' 15,000 FanPoints!? Cha-ching!! Alas, I'm still short 80 FPs of reaching 200,000. Damn! If I only woulda spent another $80 this past season... :-)

As Yankees "heroes" go, his career numbers weren't that brilliant. I would dare to say they were downright pedestrian at best. But then again, #32 was the first black player in Yankees history...

I see Girardi's considering the idea of changing his uni to #28 for next year. Jeezuz, what an idiot. Yeah, we all know (or should know) the #27 uniform story. I suppose if he hangs around long enough, which I doubt, to win four more WS titles and keeps changing his uniform number after every WS title, I'm thinkin' #32 will be outta the question...

Congrats to the Yankees and their fans on another championship. Yeah, Philly tried to make it interesting by stretching it to a game six, but NYY was clearly the better ballclub.

So now what do I do until mid-February? Watch football, basketball, and hockey? Ya-w-w-wn...

I dunno. He's not quite done yet, but comparing Utley's WS HR performance with Reggie's '77? If he gets to six or more, good on him and he deserves a spot in the record book. But unless Utley happens to notch a couple of game-breaking dingers, in my book, nothing Utley does from here going forward could ever come close to the drama and electricity that Reggie brought to that '77 WS, imo...

I suppose if Girardi's decision to go with just three SPs, all on short rest, blows up on him then he will no doubt be fileted and grilled for doing so. But, I really don't see that he had much choice. Start Gaudin? Not a snowball's chance in hell. Start Chamberlain? The Yankees pretty much cemented his role once the regular season ended. Fwiw, if I had been in Girardi's shoes at the WS's onset, I think I would have done the same...

Way too premature I suppose, but read an interesting take on potential WS MVPs depending on how it all ends. The frontrunners are perhaps Damon, Utley, A-Rod, or Lee? In the end, of the four - win, lose, or draw - I would give the edge to Utley at this juncture...

Pettitte adds to his all-time post-season leader total with his 17th win. Why am I not impressed? After all, he's only had 39 starts in the post-season. In the meantime, Whitey Ford had 10 wins. No LDS or LCS back then, for "The Chairman of the Board."

Good to see TLR returning for another year with the Cards, not hat I doubted it would happen. Just seemed to be a no-brainer.

McGwire as the hitting coach? Sure, 583 career dingers, but also a guy that hit +.300 thrice in his careeer. That said, all three seasons were abbreviated; 33, 130 and 89 games played. Not quite sure what a lifetime .263 can teach the Cardinals, that Hal McRae could not.

The cynical side of me thinks that this his way of starting the process of ingratiating himself with the BBWAA and eventually elbowing his way into the HoF. After all, he's essentially been a hermit since he retired from the game. Kinda hard to plead one's HoF case by insisting upon staying on the sidelines and offering no comments, no opinions, and no interviews...

Although he's playin' for a franchise I despise, it's still good to see A-Rod finally have a good post-season. Despite the ridiculous over-sized TEX & NYY contracts, and this past Feb.'s PEDs revelation, and any other "baggage," I don't hold any of that against him. The only reason I can come up with for the off-day between games 4 & 5 of the LDSs, is to provide a built-in "in case of inclement weather," thing. On the one hand, it kinda makes sense. On the other, it just delays the end of this year's post-season at least one more day into early November. Yep! There's nothing more ridiculous than ending a Fall Classic sometime during the first week in November. Then again, with the WBC, an early Nov. end to the WS was inevitable I suppose...

Imagine. If the WS goes seven games and ends on Nov. 5, it will only be three weeks to the day until Thanksgiving Day...

Yeah CK, I share your sentiment. Didn't mean to imply that the umps' blown calls were necessarily a good thing. I do think the whole post-season umpire thing could be improved by: (a) expanding replay to include the outfield foul lines, (b) with replay, there really wouldn't be a need for six umpires - I think the foul line umps are somewhat superfluous, anyway, and (c) scrap the so-called individual umpire merit/grading system regarding post-season assignments and give the post-season job(s) to the best-rated umpiring crews; after all, they've been working together all season long. Mixing and matching guys from different crews for the post-season, that have likely never worked together, gives a false semblance of chemistry, when getting the calls right is paramount.

To date, this has to be one of the most entertaining post-seasons in recent memory, imo. Blown calls by the umps and base-running gaffes that changed the tone/outcome of a coupla ballgames, a coupla LDS sweeps that weren't even remotely considered, critical misplays in the field, late-inning comebacks/wins against the teams' closers. Yeah, I'm thinkin' that PHI/LAD and LAA/NYY is gonna provide us with even greater drama. At least that's my hope, anyway...

A most entertaining PHI @ COL ballgame still going on, but I really have to question MLB's logic in scheduling the game for a 10:07 ET start time. It's my understanding the game now takes its place in MLB history as the coldest post-season game ever. Perhaps it wasn't much warmer during the day than it was when the game started, and yeah, maybe the game didn't have the "star power" of LAA @ BOS or NYY @ MIN, but it just seems to me that scheduling the game with an evening start was a dumb-ass (and unfair) idea. In the meantime, for East Coast fans, if they're still awake, it's after 1:45 in the morning...

CK, took a moment to read your "manifesto" over on the DC board. I go there rarely, but just wanna say I appreciate the nod. Heh, heh... I suppose when one wins a challenge title, it's sortta like winning an Oscar. There's so many to acknowledge, and the honoree hopes nobody has been left out. You had a great season, and I wish you the best of luck next year with defending your title. Yeah, six months premature I suppose. But as for me, as I've posted previously, I really don't envision playin' the IC next year - unless the 10-team league format goes away...

Sheets, I sincerely appreciate your thoughts. Whether other posters agree or disagree, I've only tried to keep this board semi-active, at the very least...

Finally, a great job by the ROC teams in its inaugural season. I'd say three outta nine on the BB, and six league titles, should most definitely be considered a highly successful first year. Perhaps additional owners will join the fun next year...

CK, still 1 game to go and I am guessing you don't want to hear too many accolades until the fat lady sings (she's in the bullpen warming up tonight). I know we all play this game for different reasons and most accomplishments on here get washed away with time except for a handful of HOF listings each year, but what a truly amazing season you've had. CDM ought to put an asterisk next to your name when they list the 2009 winners...because anything less doesn't do your accomplishment justice!

I also want to thank the ROC crew for a great showing in our first year (myself not included). Sheets and Reed did an awesome job leading the team selection and hopefully the BB finishes (MC, Madison, Reed) will incentify a few others to join in 2010 so we can grow this friendly competition between some of the very best roto managers this game has to offer.

If you look at your reflection in the bottom of a well,

What you see is only on the surface.

When you try to see the meaning, hidden underneath,

The measure of the depth can be deceiving.

The bottom has a rocky reputation

You can feel it in the distance the deeper down you stare.

From up above it's hard to see

but you know when you're there.

On the bottom words are shallow.

The surface talk is cheap.

You can only judge the distance by the company you keep

In the eyes of the professor.

In the eyes of the professor,

There's no place you can hide.

You can't hide from the eyes (of the professor)

Don't you even try.

In the eyes of the professor

You can't tell a lie,

You cannot tell a lie (to the professor)

Strip you down to size,

Naked as the day that you were born,

Naked as the day that you were born.

Take all the trauma, drama, comments,

The guilt and doubt and shame

The what if's and if only's

The shackles and the chains

The violence and aggresion,

The pettiness and scorn,

The jealousy and hatred,

The tempest and discord,

And give it up!
OK, this is what I was kinda looking for....hehe

Going forward to the next level, i.e. the LCS. If BOS gets by LAA and DET/MIN beats NYY, why should BOS be penalized (no home field advantage) as the "fourth best" team in the league when in fact they won eight more games than their opponent? The same could be asked of a potential COL/STL NLDS. Over a 162 games, COL had the better season record, albeit by one game. Why screw them for being the "fourth best" team in the league, when in fact they had the third best record in the NL. It all just doesn't seem right to me, imo...

10/05 11:22:27 o1 Dodger Blues CDM Sports Club Member Add to ignore list
Even after all these years of suffering with the WC concept, I still don't get it. What is MLB's logic whereby they mandate the team with the league's best record cannot face the WC team in the LDS, if they are both from the same division? Yeah, sure they've already played each other 18 times previous. But, so what? Best W% in the league vs. the "fourth best" team in the league. That seems fair to me...

But more importantly: It's a pleasure to read your postings here on this board ... yeah, 10 teams creates some "disconnects" ... but I hope you'll continue with the game, even as it is now. So, LA's the West Div champ. Not so sure that's such a good thing. To hell with the embarrassment of blowing a Div. lead, I think I would prefer a WC spot instead. The way the offense had disappeared for the past five games, the prospect of facin' Carp and Wainy in a five-game series next week doesn't bode well...

Come to think of it, I'll be damned if I can understand why Wainy was pulled after only 90 pitches in the first place. What could TLR be saving him for? Game #1 of the NLDS on Wednesday? I would'a figured Carp for the opener followed by Wainy for Game #2 the next day. Have I missed something?

No 20-game winner for the 2nd time in four years, and the 2nd time in modern MLB history. I'm not surpised. We all saw the eventual demise of the 20-game winner years ago with the advent of the five-man rotation, the evolution of pitch counts, and the unpredictability of so-called middle-men, specialized setup relievers, and closers. With all of that going against starting pitchers, I would say the 21st century standard for Ws is now likely 17. The 20-win season will most definitely become an even more elusive accomplishment as the years of MLB history continue to move forward, imho...

Most excellent article at mlb.com regarding the Sep. 1 roster expansion thing. I've always wondered myself, why it is that MLB sets a 25-man roster limit for five months and then suddenly everyone gets to play by a new set of roster rules for the last month of the season. It's almost like spring training come Sep. 1. Use as many guys in a Sep. ballgame as you wish if you have 'em sittin' on your bench. Is it fair? Some teams might call up 5-6 for Sep., others may call up 10+. LAD's broadcaster, Charlie Steiner, was talking about this very subject during Fri. night's broadcast. Something just isn't right with the roster expansion rules. Especially when there are potential post-season berths on the line and a team that might be in the post-season hunt is at a roster (numerically) advantage or a disadvantage...

Stating the obvious here, I suppose... I'm thinkin' both MIN and TEX need sweeps in their respective series against DET and LAA to even have a sniff of the Div title. Anything less likely ends their post-season hopes. Granted MIN & TEX each still have four games (road) remaining on the sked with those same teams a week later, but I gotta figure their post-season hopes are pretty much toast if they can only pick up a single game in the Div standings over the next three games and then with only two weeks remaining. The Ichi-Meter says 200 hits for the ninth consecutive season and one short of matching Pete Rose's career mark of ten seasons. For me, the most impressive thing about Jeter's milestone is simply that he's stayed with the same club since Day One - 15 years. Not to diminish his matching/surpassing the franchise record, but the reality is that in the free agent climate, the mere fact he's stayed with the same franchise long enough to even reach Gehrig's hit mark is a significant accomplish all by itself. Nonetheless, the man will reach 3,000 hits sometime in 2012 which will only solidify his already established HoF credentials...

TG... Perhaps not a golden rule of thumb, but I've always subscribed to it nonetheless since the advent of divisional/wild card play. I suspect, any research conducted by someone that has a helluva lot more energy than me, would more than likely affirm my position that overcoming a 5+ GB deficit (as of LD) is extremely difficult. Not as rare as an appearance by Halley's Comet, but not exactly a regular occurrence either. If proven wrong, I'm willing to adjust fire. Regardless, even if a team that is 5+ GB plays the Div/WC leaders seven times in Sep. a lot of other things need to go in their favor with the other 21-23 games on the schedule, as well as the games played by the other teams that might be slightly ahead of them in the standings as well...

It's my understanding that 1B is totally out of the question and he'll be used strictly off the bench. Think the Padilla/Garland move are great moves for the back end of the rotation for the stretch run. The back end has been a so-called concern all year long. Although I'm not sure why. I believe that after Padilla's start last Thu., the Dodgers were 22-12 in games started by someone other than Randy Wolf, Chad Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw and Hiroki Kuroda. With SF's sweep over the Rox yesterday, it brought to mind my early season bashing of the NL West back when LA was playin' .650 to .680 ball in late April to mid-May. Back when they were beating up on the wussies. Aka the NL West. Just thought I would do a little research and came up with the following. I think it's right...

The last date that a team (STL) other than SF or COL held sole possession of 1st place in the WC race was June 27. The last date that a team (MIL) other than SF or COL could claim sole possession of 2nd place in the WC race was July 5. Take away those two dates, and it's been SF or COL swapping places between 1st & 2nd for the past two months.

Five weeks remaining and of course plenty of stuff can still happen with ATL, FLA, and I suppose even the Cubs as well, still lurking...

Btw, as much as it pains me to do so, I just want to extend a thank you to the Giants for their weekend sweep over the Rox and giving LA extra one game cushion in the standings...

I suppose if you manage long enough the wins will come. But only if management is willing to tolerate the down years, that is...

There was a cheat game @ TB on Monday? When did TB start playin' a "Patriots Day" game? Jeezuz, it's August. A state holiday? Considering the early start time, I'm most definitely surprised TB actually managed to draw 24K+ for the ballgame. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean there were really 24K+ fannies in the seats.

Heh, heh... cheat game notwithstanding, I have a better excuse than Sheets for not pullin' Zach before deadline. A little thing called a time zone difference - 13 hours ahead of the East Coast. Now that the trade deadline has come and gone, just have to wonder just what the hell the Pirates' have been thinking during their two month-long fire sale: trading aeay Burnett, Gorzelanny, Grabow, Hinske, A. LaRoche, McLouth, Morgan, Sanchez, Snell, and Wilson.

Then again, I suppose the Pirates' recent player dumping doesn't really compare to the post '97 Marlins when Bonilla, Brown, Sheffield, CJ, and Eisenreich were dealt away. But at least the Marlins had actually done something (winning a WS) at the time when they decided give away their players. The Pirates, on the other hand, haven't had a winning season since '92. Do the Pirates have anything resembling a clue or a plan?

Agreed they're at their peak right now. But I don't see any reason to figure Halladay would carry his team to postseason glory anymore than Santana has, than Sabathia has. Clemens, Maddux, Unit, Pedro, I think they all have only 1 Series Championship each, each in many tries. This century alone, the Phillies, Cards, White Sox, Marlins, Angels all won without a Halladay-quality starter in their rotation.

Thanks Juan for noticing. I'm hoping to get 1st overall for the week which I've never done before. I'm at 3rd now but with some steals from low percentage guys like Ichiro and Rollins I've got a shot at it. As far as winning the OA goes, I just don't have a realistic shot right now because: I have only 1 move left, I'm missing several key guys which I probably should have, and I'm weak in the ratios. I do think, however, if I use my last 3 moves wisely I can crack the top 25. For the OA in IC, you have to figure Tom is the favorite right now but there are quite a few others (including your ROC squad) who can still make a good run at it with this many games left. I think I have a much better shot in DC with my team currently in the 70's as I have 3 buys left there and I have a roster I really like.

It would seem to me, that MLB should post/publish a continuous "running" vote tally for the Final Vote thing. Just to give the fans out there an idea just where "their" player stands, rather than shroud the entire vote in mystery until the very end. The biggest difference between the ASG starting lineup vote process and the Final Vote is that you're limited to 25 votes for the SL vote. Whereas, with the Final Vote there are no such restrictions. If you have the time and patience, you could sit at your machine and vote for hours, each and every day of the four days of voting without limitation.

Why can't (or won't) MLB post daily (or even hourly) running Final Vote numbers? Similar to the SL vote totals they always post every Mon./Tue. If MLB deems it important enough to publish the weekly SL vote progress for weeks on end, why not the Final Vote's progress over the course of a mere four days?

Heh, heh... MLB reported yesterday that Pablo Sandoval and Ian Kinsler each regained their very tight leads after falling into second place the night before. What will be the report today? They lost their leads again, but regained them overnight? Again? I dunno, am I really expected to believe all of that?

I guess it's just me, but I've become somewhat cynical about this whole Final Vote thing the past couple of years. Yeah, I'm willing to sit at my notebook and punch in, oh say, 20-25 ballots a day for "my" guy. But really, just how close are the Final Vote races? There's no way of knowing. Unlike the weekly releases of the SL ASG vote tallies...

Just gotta love mlb.com's take on the Final Vote...

Ian Kinsler, who had led for much of the starter balloting, took a slim, early lead over Brandon Inge, Chone Figgins, Adam Lind and Carlos Pena in the first 24 hours of the AL Final Vote.

After 24 hours, Pablo Sandoval took the lead in a tightly packed race with Shane Victorino, Matt Kemp, Mark Reynolds and Cristian Guzman for the NL's 33rd spot.

Yeah, okay. Hmmmm... The races are described as "a slim lead," and "a tightly packed race." How else would anyone expect MLB to describe the day one Final Vote leaders? I suspect each league's leaders will again be described later today (after two days of voting), albeit with some minor variation, as having a slim lead and/or continue as a tightly packed race. Even if it was a total blow out for one particular player, I doubt MLB would ever report it as such. After all, they need to maintain the fan interest to the absolute very end - 4 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Btw, who was responsible for Guzman getting on that NL Final Vote ballot anyway? Wtf?

I just can't buy into Charlie Manuel's defense for RyHo's ASG inclusion.

"I chose Ryan Howard because I feel he deserves to go," Manuel said. "And also I feel like he's our player -- my player. I feel like our players are the reason why I'm managing in the All-Star Game in the first place. We won the World Series. My players put me there."

Jeezuz, that's akin to the old NYY-Joe Torre-ASG logic. Using Manuel's line of thinking, he might as well have stuffed the NL reserves with the likes of JRoll, Werth, Feliz, Victorino, and Ruiz, and screw everyone else in the NL...

Perhaps the only thing that could've possibly surpassed the Hamilton fan vote farce would have been if Soriano had somehow managed to squeeze himslef into that last OF spot - over Beltran. Hamilton voted in as a starter by the fans. Disgraceful. Jeezuz, he last appeared in a ballgame on May 31. Five damn weeks ago! So, he's played a grand total of 35 games, hit a blistering .240 BA, with 6 dingers and 24 ribs, and compiled a whopping .746 OPS. And in the end, the fans deemed that worthy of a starting nod for the ASG. Those numbers don't even begin to resemble a player that deserves an ASG start. Hell, there are mid-rung catchers (taking the 3-4 days off) with better numbers than Hamilton. Yeah, I gotta give a most sarcastic nod to the sheer genius of the fan vote...

Granted Petro, the ASG is supposed to be merely an exhibition game. On the hand, because the outcome determines home-field advantage for the WS, I no longer view the game as simply an exhibition game. The managers should be able to use their respective pitching staffs, without the kid gloves, as they see fit.

Have I ever mentioned that Bud's brainstorm of the ASG's outcome as the determinant for WS home-field advantage just really, really sucks?

I dont blame team managers for giving the all star manager restrictions on the pitchers. This is an exhibition and players should not be put in jeopardy to win an exbition game. To me, the real source of the runnin' outta pitchers problem are the restrictions that are put in place when the guys shows up at the ASG. It's my understanding, the ASG managers are pretty much hamstrung by guidance given by each of the respective clubs. The restrictions seem to apply primarily to the SPs, i.e. the ASG starter can only go two IPs max, another SP-type guy can only go one IP max, another SP guy pitched on Sun., so he can only pitch to one batter but only if he's really needed, etc. It's no wonder the teams start getting short of pitchers by the eighth inning...

07/02 07:19:36 o1 Dodger Blues CDM Sports Club Member Add to ignore list
The ASG now going with 33 players on the roster in order to carry a 13th pitcher. Evidently, MLB got scared outta their pants because last year's game went 15 innings and there weren't any pitchers left. I guess, "Proud to be yer bud," Selig wants to make damn sure there is never again a repeat of the '02 game.

I dunno, the ASG could expand the rosters to 40 players (with 15+ pitchers) and there's still no way to guarantee the teams wouldn't run outta pitchers once the game goes into extras.

The whole runnin' outta pitchers thing didn't seem to be a problem in '50 (14 innings), '55 (12 innings), '67 (15 innings), '70 (12 innings), and '87 (13 innings)...

Ill comment on the fan balloting after its final. I hope Hamilton gets voted in just so this entire process looks dumb. Not unlike how I root for the BCS to look dumb every college football season.

Finally got around to punching my 25 online ballots. As far as some of the position races are concerned, my votes probably won't make much difference. But still thought it was important to contribute my two cents to the process...

Good to "hear" from you Mike. Don't believe I've seen you post since before the season began...

Happy Mid season, all. Got off to an even worse start this year than last in both, but the IC team is starting to gel and the DC team is also moving up slowly. Most would have dumped these teams, but the thought of having to wait till next year is too depressing, especially at my age. I see the leaderboard is peppered with the usual suspects.

All three have been great pitchers during their careers, but just never cared for the way were viewed as some sortta triple deity. Watching Maddux last year was sad. At least he had the sense to realize he was done and retired. Apparently Glavine isn't smart enough to realize the same thing. Smoltz, yeah he likely has something left in the tank...

Hehe, thanks Sax...surely the kiss of death. 8^)
DB - I take it yer not a fan of the Braves threesome? I'd put a fork in Glavine. Smoltz, still think he's got a year or two left.

Im glad interleague is almost over too. Dont like it for real Baseball or Fantasy

DB- You are lucky DT doesnt read this board or he would give you hell for that Smoltz post. You also have to factor in 3 + years as a lights out closer getting him 150 + saves to go along with 210 wins. Also he was a big time clutch postseason performer going 15-4 with a 2.65 ERA. Dont disagree on Blyleven though.

Thankfully, interleague play ends after three more days. Then again, I suppose we'll have to endure one last interleague game at some point down the line in order to makeup the CHW @ CHC June 16 ppd at Wrigley. According to my pocket schedule, both teams have common off days on Sep. 3 & 10. Gotta figure they'll make it up on one of those two days. I dunno, why didn't they just schedule a NYM/NYY-type crosstown day-night DH kinda thing this weekend?

Screw the fantasy baseball angle, the interleague concept sucks, imo. Have I ever mentioned that I think the scheduling is imbalanced and unfair?

Note to self: If this game wasn't so damn inexpensive to play I think I would've quit two weeks ago. That said, good "night" and good luck...

Lookin' at a photo of Smoltz with Red Sox across his chest was just flat-out weird. Granted, one start does not a season make. So, I'd like to think he'll get better than yesterday's outing the next time around. Personally, I think it's time for him to hang up the spikes...

Smoltz a possible future HoF'er? Sorry, I can't see it, 3,000+ Ks notwithstanding. Yeah, I suppose a career 3.27 ERA and a .587 WPCT (to this point) are not too shabby by anyone's standards. But if Blyleven can't get in with a career resume of 287 Ws, 3.31 ERA, .534 WPCT, 60 ShOs, and 3701 Ks, then Smoltz will need to move to the very back of the line...
